Dead (38 of 53)
Series: Straight Up Truth for a Messed-Up Church

1 Corinthians 15:3b
Even though all of the Bible is equally inspired, some chapters of the Bible seem to stand as great pillars that support the entire book. 1 Corinthians 15 is such a chapter. There are 58 verses devoted to the doctrine of the resurrection.
So, in this chapter we are slowing down as we study the greatest truth that ever came from the heart of God to the ear of man. Namely, that Jesus died, was buried, was raised from the dead, and was seen hundreds of people. So, we are going to do a 4-part mini-series within this series and focus on Jesus being DEAD, BURIED, RAISED, and SEEN.
Although I've averaged about 2-3 sermons per chapter up to this point, last time we only looked at ONE HALF of VERSE 3. Today we are going to look at the other half, the ''b'' section.
I heard about a man named Boudreaux who died. His wife went to list an obituary but found out you had to pay by the word. She said, ''Just put 'Boudreaux died.''' The clerk said, ''Ma'am the first 5 words are free if you'd like to add 3 more words.'' The lady thought and then said, ''Boudreaux died. Boat for sale.''
We don't like to think about death. We try to ignore it or at the very least sanitize it.
Even as Christians we don't like to even use the word. We say,
Granny went to be with the Lord
Aunt Betty passed away
Mama went home
Sometimes, in grief, Christians will make the unbiblical statement that someone became an angel, got their wings, or that a child became an angel baby, whatever that is.
But Paul is not afraid of the word. He says, ''Christ died.'' Now we know Jesus did not stay dead. And while I don't want to be guilty of preaching a sermon that leaves Jesus in the grave, we do need to get Him IN THE GRAVE before He can come OUT OF THE GRAVE. For before He was SEEN, before He was RAISED, and before He was BURIED, Christ was DEAD.
