I Corinthians 15:50-58
A man and his wife and mother-in-law were traveling in the Holy Land. The mother-in-law suddenly died. The Jewish funeral director said they could bury her in Jerusalem for $500 or shop her back to the USA for $50,000. The man said, ''Ship her home.''
The mortician asked, ''Sir are you sure? It's $500 here or 100x that much to ship your mother-in-law home.'' The man said, ''I'm sure. Last Easter, I went to church and they talked about a man who was buried in Jerusalem and came back to life. I can't take any chances. Send her home!''
Well this morning we're headed out to the cemetery to talk about the resurrection of Jesus and of how one day, Jesus will resurrect each one of his children.
One of the newer songs we enjoy singing speaks of the glory of Resurrection Sunday. It says:
The tomb where soldiers watched in vain
Was borrowed for three days? His body there would not remain
Our God has robbed the grave
The songwriter has in mind that first Resurrection Morning when the power of God raised Jesus Christ from the dead and emptied His grave of a physical body. But in this text, the Apostle Paul connects that event in the past with another event in the future. The day is coming where Christ Himself will return in glory and call all of God's children from the grave.
1. There's a mystery you can share! (50-52)
Last week I saw a video of a pastor who had DVR'd the Masters Tournament and was going to go home after church and watch it. And someone yelled out that Tiger had won it. The preacher was so aggravated. He didn't want to know how it ended.
Well, when it comes to the end of all things, I really want to know how it ends. And when it comes to the end of life, lots of people want to know if this IS the end. Thankfully, we don't have to wonder. Paul shares a mystery with us.
