INTRODUCTION: It's tough to predict the future. Actually, it's not hard to PREDICT the future, it's just hard to predict the future with ACCURACY. In 2018, writer Ed Morgan evaluated some the predictions made by Al Gore in his 2006 movie ''Inconvenient Truth.'' All of these were predicted to happen within ten years.
1. Increased Tornadoes - declining for decades.
2. New Ice Age in Europe - they've been spared.
3. Massive Flooding in China and India - didn't happen.
4. Polar Bear Extinction - actually they are increasing!
5. The Earth Would be in a ''True Planetary Emergency''
Religious prognosticators don't fare any better. If you follow Hal Lindsey, you've probably changed the ''end of the world'' date in your calendar several times. His Late Great Planet Earth, which was the best-selling nonfiction book of the 1970s, predicted that the world would end sometime before Dec. 31, 1988. He cited a host of world events - nuclear war, the communist threat and the restoration of Israel - as reasons the end times were upon mankind. His later books, though less specific, suggested that believers not plan on being on Earth past the 1980s - then the 1990s and, of course, the 2000s. My advice on buying books on prophecy by religious experts is that you wait a few years - you can get them a lot cheaper once they've been disproven.
We've been in a sermon series entitled, ''Headlines'' as we've discussed the gospel this month (the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus). We've contrasted the gospel to fake news, we've talked about the bad news, the good news, and now we come to the future news. What the gospel tells us about the future is encouraging. My focus this morning is on our future resurrection bodies. The Bible teaches that our bodies will be resurrected. Why is that good news?
