I Am Thirsty (5 of 7)
Series: Cries from the Cross
Tony Thomas
John 19:28-29
Sixty percent of our body composition is water. That means, if you weigh one-hundred and fifty pounds, you are carrying twelve gallons of water. That's ninety pounds of water, leaving only sixty pounds of everything else.
We all know that you can't live without water. When you become dehydrated your muscles cramp, you are susceptible to headaches, and you become lethargic. The number one reason for fatigue is the lack of hydration. Your body cannot operate efficiently without it. Your brain is a drain without water. I seriously considered replacing the grape juice with Arni's Sweet Team this morning to keep you alert (sweet tea is 98% water and 2% sugar).
If you've had surgery then you know you're not supposed to eat or drink the night before. That's why you arrive at the hospital thirsty (and hungry). You can only talk for so long before your mouth becomes dry, and the only relief is a glycerin swab or ice chips.
We're in a series called, ''Cries from the Cross,'' and we're studying the seven last statements of Christ that he made before dying on the cross. He prayed about the crowd, ''Father, forgive them.'' He spoke to the thief, ''You will be with me in paradise.'' He instructed John, ''Here is your mother.'' And he asked God, ''Why have you forsaken me?''
That brings us to the fifth statement Jesus made - and it's the shortest of the seven. The NIV says, ''I am thirsty.'' The KJV reads, ''I thirst.'' The Greek says, ''Dipsao.''
There are a lot of words that Jesus said that only he could say, and he used a lot of words that we could never say. But this fifth statement is something all of us can say, and we say it almost every day: ''I am thirsty!''
Let me set the scene: Jesus instituted his memorial feast with the twelve in an upper room. He was arrested in the Garden after being betrayed by Judas, he suffered through six illegal trials, he was denied three ti ...
