Potholes and Pitfalls on the Road to Success (Graduation)
Mike Stone
Deuteronomy 8:1-20
Most roads have inherent dangers. When we first moved here we were warned about ''Lairsey's Crossing.'' The intersection had been the sight of numerous deadly accidents, so much so that now there is a stoplight there.
We were warned about the sharp turn on Hwy 203 just north of town.
We were cautioned about the RR crossing on the Jamestown Road that can ''sneak up on you.''
There are certain times of year that drivers should be careful.
During the fall we need to watch for deer
During the winter, certain places need to watch for ice
During the holidays we watch out for drunk drivers
This is also true on the road of life. There are certain places, intersections, and seasons in which there are inherent dangers. The risk is greater. The hazards are increased. And a wise driver will pay even closer attention to the dangers.
As these graduates sit at the intersection of high school and adult life...as they enter an exciting, yet dangerous season on life's highway there are several dangers for which they need to be prepared. But they are not the only ones!
In fact, these potholes and pitfalls are so common that thousands of years ago, Moses warned Israel about these same bumps in the road. As God's people prepare to cross into Canaan, the leader knows he will not be going with them. They are on their own. And Moses warns them about the temptations that come with blessing...or potholes and pitfalls on the road to success.
Our Bible editors have divided this chapter into 20 verses. And while these delineations are not inspired, they give us a helpful break in this text and divide the chapter into 2 sections of 10 verses each.
In the first 10 verses, there is a call for thanksgiving. Moses reminds them of the blessings of God, specifically in the wilderness. For 40 years they have been clothed, fed, and watered by the good hand of God.
