Several months ago, as the weather was warming and snakes began to crawl, this picture went ''viral'' on the internet. (Put up picture of snake hiding in the leaves).

Obviously, it's the picture of a common scene from the Fall of the year. Brown leaves and sparse, green grass. But reportedly there was a snake hiding in that grass, or at least there was one hiding among the leaves. The object of the picture was simple: can you find that snake in the grass?

Because of its God-given ability to camouflage itself, most people cannot find that snake in the picture. At least not until some points it out. Notice in this next picture, I have drawn a line around that snake and highlighted him for you.

If we took the time to go back and forth between those two pictures, most people express that once they've seen that snake it's hard to NOT see it. And you wonder, how could I have ever missed it? I can no longer NOT see it!

Well in the same way, there's a snake I want you to see today. It's the snake of alcohol, which in Proverbs 23, Solomon calls a serpent in a cup, a viper in a bottle, or a ''snake in the glass.''

And just like it's reptilian counterpart, alcohol hides itself very well. It can camouflage itself behind social acceptability on one hand and societal rebellion on the other.

It is equally deceptive at hiding among both business success and abject poverty.

Like a chameleon, the snake of alcohol can adapt its deceptive appearance to adjust to its surroundings.

Alcohol is just as comfortable hiding behind a tailored suit at a business meeting as behind cut-off shorts and a tank top at a Lynard Skynard concert.

It can blend in at the seedy pool halls and it can disappear into the manicured grass at the golf course.

It can mask its identity with the sophisticated social drinker and with the common drunkard.

The serpent of alcohol is just as comfortable at the Rotary Club as the ...
