The Description of a Godly Man
Mike Stone
Psalm 1:1-3
Two middle aged ladies walked into a police station. One of them said, ''I'd like to file a missing person's report. It's my husband.'' The detective asked for a description. The lady replied, ''The man I'm looking for is 6-1, 200 pounds, sharp dressed, clear-skinned with thick curly blond hair.'' As the detective began to write, the other lady said, ''Martha, you know good and well that your husband Fred is 5 foot 7 inches, 285 pounds, a sloppy dresser with pocked skin and a receding hairline!'' The first lady replied, I know, but who wants him back?''
Often times, we go through life on a search. We are searching for the right man or woman. Sometimes we are looking for the man or woman of our dreams. At other times, we are looking for the man or woman we want to become.
But in both cases, we have a tendency to search based on the wrong description. Here in Psalm 1, the writer describes the Godly man. And by extension, the Godly woman, the Godly teen, the Godly little boy and the Godly little girl.
And we see here that godliness is not measured in feet, inches, or pounds. It is not determined by an hourglass figure or by chiseled abs. But we see that a Godly person is described in terms of their friends, their faith, and their future.
1. Look at his friends
It is interesting that the first thing the Bible says about this ''blessed man'' is some things he does NOT do. Right off the bat, if you don't ever want anyone to tell you what NOT to do, you are in the fast lane of the road to trouble.
3x in verse 1, God speaks in the negative. Not, nor, nor...
Dallas Willard says of this verse, ''He is first characterized in terms of what he does not do, which is perhaps the most immediately obvious thing about him.'' In other words, he has restraints.
A. He refuses ungodly advice
