The Gospel in a Nutshell
Mike Stone
Romans 6:23
There are many verses in the Bible we could call ''gospel in a nutshell'' verses. These are verses that could single-handedly be used to lead a lost person to faith in Christ Jesus. We have already learned several in our Scripture memory emphasis.
Verses like John 3:16, 1 Timothy 2:5, and 1 Timothy 1:15
Properly understood, there are few verses in the Bible that give a clearer presentation of the gospel of Jesus like this ''nutshell verse'' in Romans 6:23. For the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus, our Lord.
I'm not trying to be unkind but a Christian who doesn't know this:
- like a mechanic who doesn't know what a 9/16 wrench is
- a math teacher who doesn't know 2+2=4, and
- a pharmacist who doesn't know penicillin is an antibiotic
I believe this is one of the first verses I ever learned as a child. And by the way, I'm thankful for parents who raised me in church and challenged me to memorize God's Word.
Mom and Dad, if you are not taking advantage of this Scripture memory emphasis, you are missing an incredible opportunity. If you've not been doing it, there's no better time to start than with this great verse.
1. The Scripture in context (for)
The beauty of this verse reminds me of a brilliant diamond.
Picture a precious 2-carat diamond, beautifully cut and polished.
That diamond is gorgeous all by itself.
But a good jeweler will take that diamond and
- set in gold
- place it against a black cloth, and
-shine some bright lights on it, and
- the bright diamond becomes even more brilliant!
In the same way, the Holy Spirit
- takes this beautiful diamond of a verse
- places it in the gold setting of Scripture
- lays it against the darkness of our sin, and
- shines the glorious light of the gospel on this verse...?and a verse that was already brilliant just leaps off the inspired page with even greater radiance!
