The Secret to Satisfaction

Philippians 4:10-13

Leo Tolstoy records a fascinating story called, ''How Much Land Does a Man Need?'' In this fable, a man is promised that he would be given as much land as he could run around between sunrise and sunset.

At the first light of dawn he began running...feverishly running...covetously running...with wide eyes and a greedy heart...running. All day long, running.

As sunset approached he pressed himself harder to get back to the finish line and complete his challenge. As the last light of sun disappeared on the horizon, he collapsed across the finish line...and died from dehydration and overexertion.

The gravediggers began their work. 6 feet deep, 6 feet long, and 3 feet wide. If you understand your math, you'll know why Tolstoy answers his question as they lower the dead carcass into a cold grave.

More luxuries and more pleasures
More gizmos and more gadgets
More toys and more electronics

I don't need any cows right now but something else will do?
Give me this, I want that, Bless me, Lord, I pray
Grant me what I think I need to make it through the day
Make me wealthy, keep me healthy, fill in what I missed
On my never-ending shopping list

We live for more. We long for more.
