As we turn in our Bibles to the book of First Timothy, I'm reminded of the story of a lady who was in her late 30's. She had never been married. One day her pastor asked her if she planned to be single all her life. She replied that her ''life verse'' was 1 Thessalonians 4:13, ''I would not have you ignorant brethren.''

Some years later as her biological clock was ticking, the pastor asked her again if the Thessalonian text was still her life verse. She replied, ''No, now I prefer Luke 9:23. If any man will come after me, let him.''

Well the three verses in today's text ought to be EVERY Christian's ''life verse'' or every Christian's testimony. In fact, teaching on this verse Dr. John MacArthur calls his lesson, ''A Personal Testimony of God's Saving Grace.'' I have entitled today's sermon, When the Chief Met the King.''

1 Timothy 1:15-17 - This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief. Yet for this reason I found mercy, so that in me as the chief, Jesus Christ might demonstrate His perfect patience as an example for those who would believe in Him for eternal life. Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

On the morning of December 21, 1970, a man showed up unannounced at the northwest gate of the White House. He was dressed in a black suit, dark sunglasses, and a cape!

He handed the guard a note requesting a meeting with the President. It seems the unscheduled guest wanted to become a federal agent in the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs. He also mentioned he was carrying a Colt 45 he wanted to give to the Commander in Chief.

It might surprise you that the request was granted.
