Three young men who were alive last Sunday are dead this Sunday. They died
under gunfire in the tanks in Red Square. Yesterday Gorbachev called them heroes of
the Motherland. They received the highest honors that could be given by the Russian
government because they died in order that Communism would become dead. They
died for freedom, they died for liberty, they paid the maximum price and today they are
heroes, loved by many and not forgotten. The reason they died was because they
believed something very dearly. When you believe something very dearly you are
ready to live by it or to die by it.
That is what Paul was trying to tell young Timothy as he mentored him in the
faith in I Timothy, chapter 4, verse 1. We pick up this continuing thread in I and 11
Timothy to the young pastor about what his responsibility is concerning the truths we
hold.
1. 'The Spirit clearly says that in later times some
will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits
and things taught by demons.
2. Such teachings come through hypocritical liars,
whose consciences have been seared as with
a hot iron.
3. They forbid people to marry and order them to
abstain from certain foods, which God created to
be received with thanksgiving by those who believe
and who know the truth.
4. For everything God created is good, and nothing
is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving,
5. Because it is consecrated by the word of God and
prayer.
6. If you point these things out to the brothers, you
will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, brought up
in the truths of the faith and of the good teaching that
you have followed."
