For the next 4 weeks we are going to be camping out in the book of Ruth. This is a short book and a rich book. It's an incredible story about God's sovereignty, His goodness, His faithfulness to His people and how God ultimately accomplishes His purposes for our good and His glory. At the heart of the book of Ruth is one of the great love, stories of the Bible but this book is not simply a book about love, that's simply the backdrop for an incredible demonstration of the sovereignty, the goodness, and the grace of God. In this book we see the faithful love of God poured out on His people and also examples of how we to should show love toward others and how we can participate in God's mission. God is sovereign, He's doing an incredible work in our midst, and we can be involved. That's incredible news.
In this morning's text the importance of how we respond to God in the pain of life. When life is hard, when circumstances are difficulty, when times are dark... this passage points us to the importance of absolute trust in a God that is both sovereign and in control... and good. A God who is both powerful and good. A God who is not neither absent nor unconcerned.
A Season of Spiritual Darkness
[1:1] In the days when the judges ruled there was a famine in the land, and a man of Bethlehem in Judah went to sojourn in the country of Moab, he and his wife and his two sons. [2] The name of the man was Elimelech and the name of his wife Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion. They were Ephrathites from Bethlehem in Judah. They went into the country of Moab and remained there. ?
