Everyday Providence (2 of 4)
Series: Ruth

Ruth 2:1-23
Last week we looked at Ruth 1. We found out that in the time of the judges, a time in Israel's history where a lot of sin and rebellion took place, during that time there was a famine in Israel, and a man named Elimelech moved his family to Moab. This was a people that Israel had a very shaky history with, a land of idolatry. Elimelech dies and his two sons marry Moabites and then the two sons die. So his wife Naomi is now in a foreign land of idolatry left with two Moabite daughters-in-law with both sons and her husband dead. Naomi is bitter. She figures God is working against her and not for her but she heads back to Bethlehem as she hears the famine is over. One daughter-in-law, Ruth is determined to go with her, commits herself to Naomi, her people, and her God. Her and Naomi travel back to Bethlehem where the town goes into a buzz over Naomi, Mrs. Pleasant, who now demands to be called Mara, Mrs. Bitter who is back with her Moabite daughter-in-law. In that chapter we see how trials bring our theology to life and how we need to take heart in the fact that in the midst of pain and suffering God is still both sovereign and good.
This week we pick up in Ruth 2 with the odd couple in Bethlehem and we are going to see a stark and clear picture of the providence of God in the everyday affairs of Ruth and Naomi. Ruth is going to go about her business trying to survive in this new land and in the every day affairs of life God's providence is going to work in incredible ways.
What is the providence of God? God is at work in caring for His people, that He's got a plan that He is bringing about and that many times He work in unseen ways but He's at work to accomplish things for His glory and your good.
Illus.- Windshield vs. Rearview Mirror- I read one illustration this week where someone noted that we many times see God's providence in the rearview mirror not the windshield. T
