Ruth 3:1-18
As we get into Ruth 3 this morning we come to a difficult text and the most intense chapter in Ruth. Naomi and Ruth decide its time to act boldly, and that they do. In this we are going to see God work in the midst of the choices of these women and we are going to see Boaz step up to the plate and commit to doing something that will change Ruth's life. So what's brought us here...
In chapter 1- Famine, Elimelech runs, dies, sons marry Moabites, they both die. Naomi and Ruth return to Bethlehem. Ruth commits herself to Naomi, her people, and her God. Naomi is bitter. In chapter 2- things begin to change. Hope dawns we see the providence of God in the everyday affairs of Ruth. Boaz shows great compassion and generosity to Ruth and Naomi sees that God is at work and goes from bitter to joyful. Now we come to chapter 3. --- A very intense story with a big risk and the providence of God comes on a collision course with the need of Ruth and we see Naomi, Ruth, and Boaz moved to ACTION. That's what I think we need to see this morning is that God is at work and when we see that in our lives we need to act in faith in accordance with what He's doing understanding that God is sovereign and that He works in our acting... our planning, decisions, etc.
The Risky Plan
[3:1] Then Naomi her mother-in-law said to her, ''My daughter, should I not seek rest for you, that it may be well with you? [2] Is not Boaz our relative, with whose young women you were? See, he is winnowing barley tonight at the threshing floor. [3] Wash therefore and anoint yourself, and put on your cloak and go down to the threshing floor, but do not make yourself known to the man until he has finished eating and drinking. [4] But when he lies down, observe the place where he lies. Then go and uncover his feet and lie down, and he will tell you what to do.'' [5] And she replied, ''All that you say I will do.''
