A Greater Purpose (4 of 4)
Series: Ruth
Josh Malone
Ruth 4:1-22
Summarize chapters 1-3- (God's sovereignty in Trials, Providence in daily life and our actions in light of His Work).
Now we enter chapter 4. Boaz is about to act on his promise and engage the nearer redeemer. We are about to find out how this story ends. What has God been up to? Through all the difficulty and pain, has their been a better story beneath the surface?
What we see is that in the midst of all this God is at work. God is at work beneath the surface accomplishing something that is will affect all of eternity.
Illus. Recently there was an article in Coastal Living about a surfing Oceanographer. The article was about how there are waves as tall as 800 ft in the bottom of the oceans. Waves we can't see, that are incredibly powerful that affect sea life and ultimately even the climate... but we don't even know they are there, they are below the surface.
Understand... God is at work and there is a work He is doing in the world that impacts everything
[4:1] Now Boaz had gone up to the gate and sat down there. And behold, the redeemer, of whom Boaz had spoken, came by. So Boaz said, ''Turn aside, friend; sit down here.'' And he turned aside and sat down.
The Gate- the place of official business. In these times city gates where were about protecting the city but also the official business. Think of it like going down to city hall. Boaz is going there and sitting there waiting to see the nearer redeemer.
Behold- Who would have guessed it? The redeemer comes walking by. - This is another time in the book pointing to how God is at work even in these details. It's not happenstance its God's providence.
''Friend''- Boaz calls the guy friend but in the Hebrew it can literally be translated ''so and so.'' The purpose here is that we are to see that this redeemer is not to be the real redeemer, in the grand scheme he will not be significant in the story.?
