In 1994, Russell Herman, a 67 yr old carpenter from Marion, IL died. In his last will/testament he bequeathed:
- $2.4 bil to the town of Cave-In-Rock, IL
- $2.4 bil to the city of East St. Louis
- $1.5 bil for projects in southeastern IL
- $6 trl to the Federal Reserve for the national debt
There was (1) problem. The only thing Mr. Herman owned was a 1983 Oldsmobile Toronado (land yacht).

Russell Herman promised what he didn't have and couldn't make good on! Yet while he may've not left anything of value, he did leave us w/ a great reminder - you can't give away what you don't possess no matter noble/inspired your intentions might be. Either you have the ability to make your promises a reality or you don't. But not so w/ God. He has all the means to make good on His promises - and in a world of broken promises, you can be sure He will meet His obligations.

Last week we began what is one of the most essential, yet overlooked, teachings in the Christian life. In fact, some of the most respected men/women in the Christian faith (Spurgeon, Chambers, Murray) all agreed that understanding this teaching is most critical to living a health, victorious Christian life - that it is impossible to truly thrive w/out possessing this fundamental, foundational teaching - COVENANT.

The reason this teaching is so critical is b/c it's at the core of every aspect of the Christian life - a crimson thread of grace woven thru-out the fabric of Scripture from the OT thru the NT declaring the faithful promise and relentless pursuit of God to be in relationship w/ His creation. It is essential to not only understanding who God is and how He moves, but it speaks to our identity. Security and purpose in Christ.
