Series: The Joy of RE - A Study in Philippians
Joey Rodgers
Philippians 1:1-11
Have you ever thought about the power of a prefix? A prefix is an affix (a series of letters/numbers) placed at the front of a word stem that either qualifies or changes the meaning of the word. For example, the word microscope - the prefix micro qualifies the type of scope. Or devalue - the prefix de explains that value is diminished. I find it interesting that while there are a large number of prefixes in the English language, the (4) most common prefixes account for 95% of prefixed words - dis, in, un, and re.
dis - is derived from the Latin meaning apart, asunder, away and is used to reverse a words meaning giving it an opposite meaning from the root word - like/dislike
in - means to be in or on or to disqualify as being not. Example - inject means to place in; inscribe means to write on - while invalid means to make not valid.
un - means not. So unheard means to not be heard and unforgettable means it cannot be forgotten.
re - means to again indicating repetition or to move back indicating w/drawal or backward motion. Like revert - to go back or repeat to say again - or repent - make an about face turn from sin to God.
Now that you've had your etymology lesson for today, let me explain the intent of this newt series of lesson I've entitled RE. In the Paul's letter to the Philippians, he was determined to encourage the Philippian believer b/c they had encouraged him. He wrote to inspire them to live joyful Christian lives for the glory of God telling them he wanted them to:
1 REMEMBER their Partnership in the Gospel
2 REMAIN Faithful to their Heavenly Calling
3 REIMAGINE Life w/ a Godly Attitude
4 RECONSIDER the Cost of Followship
5 REJOICE in their Walk w/ the Lord
As a means of setting the stage for the series, Philippi was a church near/dear to Paul's heart. It was a church who's start involved (2) women and a warden. Lydia ble ...
