13 Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man
who gains understanding,
14 for she is more profitable than silver and
yields better returns than gold.
I stayed up to watch it, I don't know if you did. I didn't
watch it every night but I did some of the nights, particularly
the great race of the century between Ben Johnson and Carl
Lewis. I had waetched that this summer and seen Lewis beat
Johnson and I said, "Well, I just know he is going to do it
because he is going for that second gold in the Olympics.
After the one in 1984, he is going for it again and break the
record. I know Carl Lewis is going to win. But I was amazed
as you were when suddenly, bolting out of the starting blocks,
Ben Johnson tore out down that lane and it looked like he was
shot out of a cannon. I have never seen a guy run so fast in
all my life and he never looked back. At the end of 100 meters
he was not only the Olympic champion but he had broken the
world's record! And Carl Lewis, great athlete that he is, was
left in the dust. I was stunned by that. I was kind of
pulling for the American, of course, but I was pulling for Carl
Lewis to win, to tell the truth.
And then shortly thereafter, the stunning revelation came
that Ben Johnson had been taking drugs - steroids - and because
of that he was disqualified. The medal goes to Carl Lewis. Ben
Johnson goes back to Canada in disgrace, the medals stripped
from him, hundreds and probably millions of dollars he will
lose because of refusal to have endorsements, embarrassment to
his country, his family and his friends. I hurt for him. I
was disappointed as were millions of people.
To me this was just another case of a person who had
