Here Is Your Mother (3 of 7)
Series: Cries from the Cross
Tony Thomas
John 19:25-27
When we think of adoption we think of young couples with love to give, and children who need to be loved. But the Bible mentions two kinds of adoptions. First, as Christians we are adopted into the family of God. Galatians 4:5 reads, ''God sent his son to redeem us that we might be adopted into his family.''
But the second kind of adoption is one we don't normally think of until later in life. When our parents age, or when they're unable to care for themselves we have a Christian duty to adopt them into our homes.
We're in a series called, ''Cries From the Cross,'' and we're looking at the seven statements Jesus made while dying on the cross. The first thing he said was, ''Father, forgive them,'' and the second statement was, ''Today, you will be with me in paradise.''
Today let's focus on the third statement of Christ that he made at the cross. But before we get there let me set the scene. Jesus suffered through six illegal trials: three were Roman and three were Jewish. Three of the trials were civil and three of them were religious. But all of them were illegal and Jesus was railroaded into crucifixion.
During those trials, Jesus was beaten beyond recognition. The Romans used a cat of nine tails and every blow left nine bruises and lacerations on his body. If he received forty stripes, that means he suffered three hundred and sixty individual wounds! That Mel Gibson film was very real, wasn't it?
Most of the time, the victim did not survive the beating! So when Jesus was compelled to carry his cross to Golgotha, he was nearly dead already. Judas betrayed him, Peter denied him, and the rest deserted him -except John.
John refers to himself as, ''... the disciple whom Jesus loved.'' I think he was loved for a variety of reasons. But the other eleven were loved, too, but they were absent at the cross. No Peter, no Andrew, no James, no Matthew. They fled fr ...
