You Will Be With Me in Paradise (2 of 7)
Series: Cries from the Cross
Tony Thomas
Luke 23:39-43
We started a new series last week called, ''Cries from the Cross.'' When Jesus was crucified, he made seven statements from the cross. These statements were his last words before he died. Last words are usually important words. Steve Irwin was known as the ''Crocodile Hunter.'' He died several years ago when a stingray pierced his heart with its barb. His last words were prophetic: ''I'm dying.''
Last Sunday we looked at the first statement Jesus made: ''Father, forgive them.'' The second statement he made from the cross was, ''Today, you will be with me in paradise.'' That statement was made in response to one of the thieves who made a request: ''Remember me when you come into your kingdom.''
We're in Luke 23 so let's read the story:
39 One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: ''Aren't you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!''
40 But the other criminal rebuked him. ''Don't you fear God,'' he said, ''since you are under the same sentence?''
41 ''We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.''
42 Then he said, ''Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.''
43 Jesus answered, ''Today you will be with me in paradise.''
There is a phrase that the news media loves to use: ''Saved at the last minute.'' If you do a Nexis search you'll be surprised by the number of times it is used.
For example, there is a police force in New Jersey that wasn't happy. Budget cuts forced them to downsize, but then a federal grant came through. Those jobs were, ''Saved at the last minute.''
A family of five was on a vacation of a lifetime, yachting long-distance to the Bahamas. But, a storm came out of nowhere and capsized the yacht. Fortunately for them, a cruise ship happened by and they were, ''Saved at the last minute.''
