How does it feel when you are talking with someone and that person ignores you? How do you feel if what you are talking about is important to you? To be treated with silence implies that you are not important enough for the person to respond.
Their lack of response can cause you to feel hurt, upset and frustrated. How would you feel if Jesus did not respond to your prayer for help when you expected he would? That is the case of the story we are going to look at.
One writer described this story saying, ''There is no incident in our Lord's earthly ministry more puzzling than this.''
Background :1-9 Jesus had a conflict with the religious leaders over washing of hands before a person ate their food. This was just one of many conflicts that he had with the religious leaders. He decides to leave Judah to get away from the conflict so that he can teach his disciples truths which they need to understand.
EMOTIONAL PLEA :21-22 District of Tyre and Sidon - they were costal towns outside of Israel. Tyre was 35 miles northwest of Capernaum and Sidon was 50 miles. Depending on where they went it in the area it would have been a two-to-three day walk to the north. It meant that they would have been deep into Gentile country.
:22 Canaanite - the name of the ancient inhabitants of Palestine before it was conquered by the Israelites 1400 years before. This is the only time in the NT that the word is used.
The Canaanites were pagan people who worshiped the god Baal which they believed controlled the local weather. They also worshiped Baal's counterpart the female goddess Ashtoreth who was worshipped through the pursuit of pleasure.
Some 300 years before Jesus, Alexander the Great conquered the area and brought Greek thinking, philosophy and their pagan gods.
