In the Roman world women were treated with little or no value. The theme of the Roman Empire could have been James Brown's song in the 1960's: It's A Man's World. Men ruled and treated women as second-class citizens.

In the Jewish world women were also treated as second-class. They were not allowed into the inner court of the temple, but only into the outer court called the court of women. They were not allowed to divorce their husbands and could not own property.

Into this culture Jesus came and showed that he cared for women. Care - Gk. to be concerned about someone's wellbeing. Mark 4:37-38 Out of fear of drowning in the storm he disciples said to Jesus, ''Do you not care that we are perishing?'' Goodspeed - ''Does it make no difference to you . . .''

To care is to be concerned about their well-being. It is to do what you can to help them in their time of need.

Jesus cares about our difficulties, problems and struggles. The gospel stories show us how he cared for people with the problems they faced in their everyday lives.

DESPERATE DAD :21-23 Humility :22 Ruler - oversaw the elders of local Synagogues who were in charge of arranging the services such as: who would lead in prayer, read the Scripture and preach each week. He was an important and respected leader in the Jewish community.

Jairus - Gk. whom God enlightens. He humbled himself in spite of his position in the community because it meant nothing to him compared to his daughter's desperate need of healing at the moment. It was desperate people like the leper (1:40) who believed Jesus could heal. They were more concerned about their need than their pride. Earnestly :23 Implored - Gk. (KJB besought, NIV begging) - Gk. pleading. You plead because you know there is nothing you can do. This is the same thing the leper had done (1:40).
