Mark 9:17-27
Our English word ''desperate'' comes from the Latin word meaning ''to despair.'' It is to be without any hope something will change.
We become desperate when there is nothing more that we can do. We have run out of choices, opportunities and options. We may feel desperate when we face a situation that seems hopeless.
1. An emotional issue such as anger or depression that continues to bother us when something happens or is said to us.
2. An illness or sickness that our doctor and specialists are not able to diagnose and therefore not able to treat to make us better.
That is the story which we are going to look at. A desperate father comes to Jesus to help his son who is controlled by an evil spirit.
Evil spirit A spiritual being, maybe a fallen angel, under the control of Satan and opposed to God who would influence or possess a person physically so they were not in control of themselves.
Peloubet's Bible Dictionary - ''There are evil spirits, subjects of the evil one (Satan), who, in the days of our Lord himself and his apostles especially, were permitted by God to exercise a direct influence over the souls and bodies of certain men.''
Jews believed they were the spirits of the wicked dead and could be exorcised by fumes from the roasting heart and liver of a fish.
DESPERATE FATHER :17-18 Mute (KJB dumb) - Gk. not able to speak (7:37). Calvin - ''Satan had taken possession of his tongue and ears.''
:18 He was not always under the influence of an evil spirit, but when it came upon him it caused him to lose control of himself. His lose of control is described by four physical symptoms: 1. Throws him down - takes control of his physical body.
2. Foams - medical word which described epilepsy. It was probably through epilepsy that an evil spirit took control.
3. Grinds his teeth - as a result of not being in control of his body.
