Who Is Jesus
Stephen Whitney
Luke 1:31-32, 2:10-11
People have been confused about who Jesus really was from the beginning when he came teaching preaching and healing people. During his third year of ministry he asked his disciples in Matthew 16:13-14 ''Who do people say that I am? And they said, ''Some say John the Baptist (who had been killed by Herod), other say Elijah (considered to be the greatest OT prophet) and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.'' Even those who saw him and heard him did not really understand who he was.
Throughout history people have been confused because they did not understand who he really was. People have erred in believing that Jesus was God but not man or that he was man but not God.
The trouble people had was accepting the fact that Jesus was both God and man in one person which theologians call the God-man.
Today there is still misunderstand about who Jesus really is: Jehovah's Witnesses - Jesus is not God, but the first son that Jehovah brought forth. Michael the archangel is now Jesus.
Mormons - Jesus is the firstborn spirit child of God by whom everyone else was created and are junior to.
Eastern mysticism - Jesus is considered to be one of a long line of ''Masters'' (teachers) who have themselves realized divinity.
Society - in our culture people believe that Jesus was a good teacher and example who came to show us what God is like. Most people believe Jesus was a man, but not that he was God.
The Bible clearly teaches that Jesus was both God and man in one unique person who is called the Son of God. The names and titles given in Scripture describe his character and nature.
John Chrysostom (d. 407) - ''I do not think of Christ as God alone, or man alone, but both together . . . he is both God and man.'' GOD AND MAN 1:31-32 Name :31 Jesus ((72x) - is the Greek form of the Hebrew name Joshua which literally means Jehovah saves or salvation is of Jehovah.
