Will Rogers once said there are four stages in a man's life:

1. You believe in Santa Claus.
2. You don't believe in Santa Claus.
3. You are Santa Claus.
4. You look like Santa Claus.

We're in a series called, ''Searching for Christmas,'' and we're using some of the old Christmas classics to highlight a spiritual truth each week. We used ''Christmas Vacation'' to search for family. We used It's a ''Wonderful Life'' to search for hope. Today's classic is ''Miracle on 34th Street'' and we're searching for a Christmas miracle.

''It's a Wonderful Life'' is the most popular Christmas movie, and it's not even about Christmas. ''Miracle On 34th Street'' is a Christmas movie, but it was released in May of 1947. Edmund Gwenn won an Oscar for his portrayal as Kris Kringle, and he was the only actor to win an Oscar as Santa Claus.

The movie begins on Thanksgiving Day with the Macy's Parade at 34th and 7th streets. There were no extras in the movie (it was live footage). The scene from the apartment window was shot once, without error, during the parade -- and there were no retake)!

''Miracle On 34th''Street overcame two major obstacles: 20th Century Fox thought it was too corny to succeed, and they negotiated for months with Macy's and Gimbles about cooperating over the script.

When the movie was released, Macy's closed for a half-day so their twelve-thousand employees could watch the movie. The Catholic Church protested over the role played by Maureen O'Hara because she was divorced, and this was Natalie Woods' sixth film (she was only eight years old).
