We're in a Christmas series called ''Searching for Christmas.'' Last Sunday we talked about the dysfunctional family of Jesus and compared his family to Clark Griswold's family in ''Christmas Vacation.'' All of us have dysfunctional families, even if we don't recognize it. Regardless of whom mom and dad are, or what they did or did not do, God can still use us in profound ways.

Today's theme is ''Searching for Hope,'' - and I want to learn a lesson from the most popular Christmas movie of all time - which is not even about Christmas! I'm talking about, ''It's a Wonderful Life.''

Here's a little trivia you might enjoy. Jimmy Stewart was the director's second choice for the leading role. Did you know that? The first choice was Cary Grant. Donna Reed was fifth in line to play Mary. The taxi driver and policeman were named Bert and Ernie! And Herbert Hoover thought the movie was subversive because it discredited bankers and maligned the upper class.

The movie was based on a short-story titled, ''The Greatest Gift'' by Philip Van Doren Stern. He tried to turn it into a movie without success. But, he made a Christmas card out of it and Frank Capra liked it so much he paid $10,000 in or to produce the movie, and as Paul Harvey used to say, ''Now you know the rest of the story.''

Capra assembled a cast that included Jimmy Stewart, Donna Reed, and Lionel Barrymore. But, it wasn't a huge hit! Out of four-hundred movies released in 1947, it placed twenty-sixth, one spot ahead of ''Miracle on 34th Street.''
