Would you find your way to Daniel chapter 7, Daniel chapter 7 picking up in verse number 1 tonight? I struggled with what to entitle tonight's message. Ray Stedman entitled his sermon out of Daniel chapter 7, The World Menagerie. That's a fancy word. Another pastor referred to this as Animal Farm, going back to George Orwell's book that we had to read in high school English Lit class. Jerry Vines entitled it The Beast, Nations, and the Little Horn. That's a fancy title. I just entitled tonight A Terrifying Dream and an Everlasting Kingdom, Part One.
Daniel, chapter 7 and verse number 1 tonight. We move into chapter 7. As we do, we come to the second major division in the Book of Daniel. The Book of Daniel contains 12 chapters in two major sections. Chapters 1 through 6 are primarily historical narrative that deal with some prophetic apocalyptic literature. Chapters 7 through 12 are primarily prophetic apocalyptic with some history. The first 6 chapters narrate the life of Daniel as he served under three kings: Nebuchadnezzar, Belshazzar, and Darius.
The last six chapters record a series of visions that came to Daniel. These visions are prophetic in nature, and they lay out the course of history from Babylon through a succession of kings and kingdoms until the Second Coming of Christ and his establishment of his messianic kingdom. Only God could give such prophecies with their interpretation, because only God - Listen to this, church - only God can write history before it happens. Can I get an amen?
