"LORD OVER DEMONS"
Mark 5:1-20

This amazing and marvelous event in the life of Jesus has so much to
teach us today about the lordship of Jesus Christ. I'm going to read just
a few verses and then I'll be preaching through it, and then we'll come
back and highlight other verses. Let's begin at verse I:
THEY CAME TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE SEA, INTO
THE COUNTRY OF THE GERASENES. AND WHEN HE HAD
COME OUT OF THE BOAT, IMMEDIATELY A MAN FROM THE
TOMBS WITH AN UNCLEAN SPIRIT MET HIM, AND HE HAD
BEEN DWELLING AMONG THE TOMBS. AND NO ONE WAS ABLE
TO BIND HIM ANY MORE, EVEN WITH A CHAIN.
Verse 7:
CRYING OUT WITH A LOUD VOICE, HE SAID, "WHAT
DO I HAVE TO DO WITH YOU, JESUS, SON OF THE MOST
HIGH GOD? I IMPLORE YOU BY GOD, DO NOT TORMENT
MEI"
Verse 13:
AND HE GAVE THEM PERMISSION. AND COMING OUT,
THE UNCLEAN SPIRITS ENTERED THE SWINE; AND THE HERD
RUSHED DOWN THE STEEP BANK INTO THE SEA, ABOUT TWO
THOUSAND OF THEM; AND THEY WERE DROWNED IN THE SEA.
THE HERDSMEN RAN AWAY AND REPORTED IT IN THE CITY
AND OUT IN THE COUNTRY. AND THE PEOPLE CAME TO SEE
WHAT IT WAS THAT HAD HAPPENED. AND THEY CAME TO
JESUS AND OBSERVED THE MAN WHO HAD BEEN DEMON
POSSESSED SITTING DOWN, CLOTHED AND IN HIS RIGHT
MIND, THE VERY MAN WHO HAD HAD THE "LEGION"; AND
THEY BECAME FRIGHTENED.
This story is very familiar to us. Recently I spoke on Jesus being
Lord Over Nature. Now we see Him as Lord Over Demons. In the next message
we'll see Him as Lord Over Death. These are very important parts of our
understanding of the lordship of Jesus Christ. You say, "Well, Pastor, it
seems there is a lot about demons in the Book of Mark." And there is. In
fact, more in this one book than all the other Gospels, and as we go
through the Book of Mark and those passages, we must speak to them.
