I thought we had a crazy Thanksgiving until I got to talking with Al Overfelt after church last week. Al said they had sixty-eight family members gather in one house to eat Thanksgiving dinner together! He also said they have a new family member and he asked her what she thought. She said, ''After talking to all sixty-eight members of the family, you have exactly two who aren't insane!''

We laughed all the way home because it's true! The best part of Thanksgiving is seeing your family. But, the worst part of Thanksgiving is seeing too much family! The truth is: there's a Chevy Chase or a Cousin Eddie in everybody's family!

I grew up watching Leave It to Beaver, My Three Sons, and Ozzie andand Harriet. The only dysfunctional family I remember was The Beverly Hillbillies.

Things are just a bit different today. You can watch Housewives of New York, Modern Family, 19 Kids and Counting, Duck Dynasty, Bridezillas, Breaking Amish, Bachelorettes in Alaska, and My Big Fat Obnoxious Boss. There's not a single, normal person in any of those shows!

Whether it's the 60s or the twenty-first century, there's something alluring about a family. This morning we're beginning a new series called, ''Searching for Christmas.'' Christmas is all about family and in this first message I want us to learn a few lessons by thinking of a very dysfunctional family.

I'm thinking of ''Christmas Vacation'' with Chevy Chase. That movie came out in 1989. Chevy Chase played the role of loveable Clark Griswold, and my favorite character in that movie is Cousin Eddie!

Biblically, let's contrast the Griswold's with the family of Jesus. I can tell that some of you think I'm guilty of blasphemy! But, if you're honest - I think you'll agree while being shocked! Truth is still stranger than fiction.
