Revelation 2:8-11
Revelation 2:8-11 - ''And unto the angel of the church in Smyrna write; These things saith the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive; (9) I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan. (10) Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life. (11) He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.''
Smyrna means bitter and is the same as ''myrrh'' and has to do with embalming, with suffering, with death. This church is the church of tribulation -- the church of suffering and martyrdom.
It is the only church which Jesus has no other word but one of commendation. To the other churches -- He has a pointed sentence of criticism -- but not Smyrna. Every word He says is one of commendation and encouragement.
Smyrna is called ''the poor little rich church.'' How can anyone be poor and rich at the same time?
Look at someone with great wealth -- A fine home -- everything money can buy. We would say, ''He is rich!''
Then look at someone who lives in a very modest home -- does not have enough money to buy even the necessities of life -- you would not say he is rich -- you would say, ''He is poor!''
John D. Rockefeller, Sr. was a strong, husky young man. Early in his years -- he determined to make money. By 33 years-of-age, he earned his first million. At age 43 -- he controlled the biggest corporation in the world. By age 53 -- he was the world's richest man -- the only Billionaire. Then he developed a sickness called ''Alopecia.''
