John 1:1-5

Today, we are beginning our new Christmas series, A Thrill of Hope. This Sunday, the first Sunday of Advent, is of course themed with hope. - We live in a world in need of hope. - Not just in need of POSSIBILITY, but in need of CERTAINITY. We don't just need to know thing CAN BE OK. We need to know things WILL BE OK. - That's what deep down in our heart every single one of us wants.

I believe Jesus Christ brings that hope. That's good news! He is the one we celebrate this year. In Christ, we know things will be OK even when in the moment they are not OK. We can have certainty, and not just possibility if we know Jesus.

Jesus is the great hope bringer. With His birth, life, death, and resurrection there can be hope for anyone who trusts Him. The next four Sundays we will be in John 1. John 1 tells us about Jesus and His coming to earth and the implications of that in a way unique to this gospel. Where Matthew and Luke begin with His birth, John begins before His birth and works toward it.

This morning we will dive into John 1:1-5 and we are going to look at what John has to say about the Word a name he uses for Jesus. He reveals later in the chapter, 1:14-18, that Jesus is the Word. - This first 5 verses teach us incredibly powerful truth about Jesus. Hope giving truth. Truth that can revolutionize our lives. What we learn about Jesus in these verses can revolutionize our lives, if our neighbors knew it, it could revolutionize there life. If these verses be true... all of life is transformed by Christmas.

John 1:1-5- In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
