THE SHREWD BUSINESSMAN
Luke 16:1-13
When we read about the things that are happening in the world, we should not
be too alarmed. Concerned, yes. Praying, yes. But not too alarmed, because
it's going to continue to get worse and worse. The Christian knows where the
world is headed. Realistically, we can read the scriptures and know.
Therefore, that gives us a perspective and hope as we realize that the world is
coming to a grand climax at the coming of Jesus Christ. So, lift up your eyes,
redemption is drawing nigh.
Jesus gave us a story about a shrewd businessman, and in it we see some
valuable lessons for us today.
A good man can do a good thing badly. Neville Chamberlain came back with a
piece of paper, after meeting with the German officials, and said, 'We've got
it--The guarantee of peace." But in a very brief time, the world was plunged
into World War II. He was a good man who wanted to do a good thing, but he did
it poorly.
On the other hand, a bad man can do bad things very well. The "Great Train
Robbery," for instance, or the Brinks Robbery. Or the fellow that pulled the
heist on the airplane, bailed out, and parachuted, getting away with much money.
You don't like it, but you've got to respect the fact that they were pretty
clever. They did wrong, an evil thing, and yet we have to say begrudgingly,
they were pretty clever, pretty sharp folks. They did bad things in a bad way,
but they did it well.
Now, Jesus, in telling this story was talking about some men that were in
bad business dealings. They did some bad things in a bad way, but they did it
well. And Jesus was drawing a picture and telling us that there are some things
that we ought to be doing well. These men were doing it for the wrong reason.
There ought to be some insights we can draw from their lives, He says, in ord ...
