Joshua 14

Caleb was a great man, and as we continue in the Book of Joshua, I want
us to look at this senior adult who was a fantastic man, and whose life speaks
to mine.
You know, every once in a while a senior adult will come up to me and
ask, "Do you know how old I am?" I've learned two things by experience when I'm
asked that question: First, it's usually a man who asks, rather than a woman.
I don't know why. I'm just saying that in my experience that's what happens.
Secondly, I always know that they look younger than they are, or they wouldn't
ask.
So when they ask that, they usually have an extra spring in their step,
they're spritely and strong, there's a lot of vigor in their lives and they just
sparkle when they ask me that question. I love senior adults. We have a lot
of them around here who really encourage me. They sparkle and I'm thrilled by
them.
I overhear their conversations and pick up little things that are just
unforgettable. The other day one of our couples was coming up the steps, and
the husband failed to assist his wife. When they finally got to the top of the
stairs, she turned to him and said, "Bob, you're not as gallant as you were when
I was a gal." And he said, "Sal, you're not as bouyant as you were when I was a
boy!1"
They are great folks and they have a vision of God, what He's about and
what He's doing. I like to be around people who are still excited about living.
In Caleb, we see a man who is going full-steam-ahead at the age of 85! The
Bible, in this passage and over in the Book of Numbers, says that Caleb had a
heart for God. He said: "I wholly followed the Lord my God." (Chap. 14:8)
That is an interesting phrase, "whoLly follawd" iLt means that Caleb
was a man who went ahead with the sails all open. He had the fu ...
