I love when people come up clutch. Whether it's a QB who throws a Hail Mary to win the game or a walk-off homerun to send your team into the next round of the playoffs - there's something awesome when a person steps up and comes thru in a pressure spot. Last summer, I was a proud dad when Camden came up clutch w/ 2 outs/2 strikes in the top of the 6th to drive in 2-runs to put our team in the lead against VA.
But a sports hero pales in comparison to those people in history who stood up/stood tall when most others were shrinking around them. Whether it was William Wilberforce who stood to abolish slave trading in England, or Rosa Parks standing her ground during the civil rights movement, to Martin Luther nailing his 95 Thesis on the church door at Wittenberg to initiate the Reformation - these were true heroes who's lives changed the course of history.
Such could be said of the Prophet Elijah. Elijah lived during the most depraved time in Israel's history as the people had abandoned Jehovah to serve the false gods around them. After 200 yrs of wicked kings, things finally reached a climax when King Ahab came onto the scene. The Bible says Ahab did more evil in the eyes of God than any king before him. But of all of his sins, the worst thing he did was to lead the people away from Jehovah towards the false gods of Baal/Asherah.
Baal was the god of rain/fertility who was believed to have control over nature. Asherah was kind of like Baal's wife. These false gods promised that if a person worshipped them, then they'd make their crops grow and give them a better life. But isn't this what all false gods do - they promise what only the true God actually can provide?
So, God raised up Elijah to confront Ahab and his lame leadership by telling him that b/c of his idolatry, God wasn't going to allow it to rain until Ahab/Baal were exposed as impotent frauds. So, God allowed a famine u ...
