Here's Your Sign
Richard Bradley
Matthew 7:24-29

Bill Engvall is a well know comedian. He's well known for several reasons. The first is, unlike a lot of comedians, he's actually funny. The second is that you can listen to him without being exposed to so much vulgar talk that's common to today's comedy. The third is his comedy routine that he calls ''Here your sign.'' It's the idea that you can't fix stupid. He says the problem is that stupid people don't know they're stupid so someone has to point it out to them. His proposal is to print out a bunch of stupid signs and then when you see someone doing something really stupid you hand them their sign to wear around their neck. ''Here's your sign!''

Jesus didn't use the word stupid in this text but he did use the word ''foolish'' which in His day was just about the same thing. Believe it or not one of the translations of this word is ''stupid'' or ''blockhead.'' And no, I didn't make that up. The inference is plain enough. Those who build their houses upon the rock are smart. Those who build their house on the sand are ''stupid.''

Here's your sign!

Matthew 7:24-29

24 ''Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock:
25 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.
26 ''But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand:
27 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.''
28 And so it was, when Jesus had ended these sayings, that the people were astonished at His teaching,
29 for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.
