Praise the Lord
Stephen Whitney
Psalm 145
Martin Luther - ''The most acceptable service we can do and show unto God and which he desires of us, is, that he be praised of us.''
Ronald Allen in Worship: Rediscovering the Missing Jewel wrote: ''What is the essence of worship? It is the celebration of God! When we worship God, we celebrate him: We extol him, we sound His praises, we boast in Him.''
The Hebrew word that is used for worship is praise. Praise (165x) - Heb. to boast, honor or glorify. Note: Here are a few times it does not refer to worship.
A worship song in the 1990's described praise of God: O Lord I stand amazed at the wonder of your deeds And yet a greater wonder brings me to my knees. I will praise you because of who you are, Not because of all the mighty things which you have done. Lord I worship you because of who you are You're all the reason that I need to lift my praise because of who you are.
We praise or worship God because he is God, not just because of what he has done.
Title A song of praise - acknowledging God's character. Note: Psalms 146-150 all begin with the phrase: Praise the Lord! These last 6 psalms form a conclusion to the book of psalms.
Structure This is one of 8 acrostic psalms in which each verse begins with a successive letter of the Hebrew alphabet so that it could be easily committed to memory. David took the time to write this detailed acrostic psalm of praise which is one of the most beautiful expressions of the goodness and sovereignty of God in scripture.
PRAISE OF GOD :1-3 Extol - Heb. to lift up implying greatness or significance.
Bless - Heb. to adore or praise. We cannot give anything to God but our adoration and praise.
Name - was a reference to a person's character. Too often we only praise God for what he does, not for who he is. Praise God that he is holy, just, compassionate, righteous, loving, sovereign, all powerful, faithful, forgiving, merciful and kind.
