Intro/Attention

Last week I began a sermons series on the book of Hosea. It's a series I've entitled, Boundless: God's relentless love. Today, we come to Hosea 2 and consider the sermon subject, Plot Twist. READ TEXT

*You know what a plot twist is don't you? Well, for the uninitiated, a plot twist is, ''a radical change in the expected direction or outcome of the plot of a story.'' We see them in books, in sports, and in movies. Maybe you can think of a few of the greatest ones now. Possibly the most memorable plot twist in a movie comes from Star Wars episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back. You can probably think of the exact moment the plot twist came out. Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader have been engaged in an epic battle. Vader says to Skywalker, ''Obi-Wan never told you what happened to your father.'' Skywalker replies, ''He told me enough! He told me you killed him.'' Vader replies, ''No, I am your father.'' Nobody saw that coming; nobody. I fact, only a small number of actors in the cast and the directors even knew it was coming while they were filming the movie. Talk about a plot twist!

Well, here in Hosea 2 we see a plot twist of far more significance. As we walk through the first part of this chapter, it becomes clear what God must do to His people in response to their constant spiritual adultery. Yet, as we get into the second half, we see that God does the exact opposite. We are going to watch God do something that nobody would have seen coming; nobody.

Israel was experiencing great material prosperity but it resulted in spiritual complacency and full-blown idolatry. Israel left the God who loved them and rescued them out of Egypt and went after the gods and things of the world. Hosea 2:13 summarizes the situation well when concerning Israel's relationship with God it says, ''she...forgot me, declares the Lord.''
