Into the Fray (2 of 6)
Series: Jude
Robert Dawson
Jude 3-4
It was not uncommon to find me in an argument or fight with my older brother or with a friend growing up. They were usually over silly things like whose turn it is, who got the bigger piece of cake, the most cookies or the last fudgesicle. Mom and dad would inevitably intervene and say something like, ''There's no need to fight. That's not something worth fighting over.'' They were right. The things we fought over as kids were petty. They were not worth fighting over. They should not have been fought over.
Not much has changed. Most of the things we fight over in life are not worth fighting over. They should not be fought because they are just not that important. As a general rule, fighting isn't a good thing but there are some things worth fighting for. There are somethings we must fight for.
This is the message of Jude. He calls each of us into the arena of battle. It is time for believers to earnestly contend for the faith. His message to the church... ''Let's get ready to rumble!''
Jude 3-4 - Beloved, while I was making every effort to write you about our common salvation, I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints. 4 For certain persons have crept in unnoticed, those who were long beforehand marked out for this condemnation, ungodly persons who turn the grace of our God into licentiousness and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.
Have you ever had to change your plans because something pressing and more important came up? That's what happened to Jude. Jude had already determined what he wanted to write about, and it was not a call to arms but a call to gratitude and joy. Jude was looking forward to writing to the church about their common salvation.
- He wanted to celebrate what they shared in Christ.
- He wanted to talk about the grace of God.
- He wanted to bath in the beauty ...
