The End Is Coming Soon (9 of 9)
Series: You Better Believe it
Bob Ingle
Mark 13
The 34th President of the United States Dwight D. Eisenhower once said:
''I am greatly interested in the future because I'm going to spend the rest of my life there.''
There is a lot of truth to that. We live much of our lives with our eyes and our minds on the future. The future fascinates us. The future frightens us. The future excites us. We wonder about the future. We dream about the future. We obsess about the future.
In Mark 13, we hear Jesus talk about the future. And that's really cool considering He's the One who created time in the first place, and He knows everything beginning to end. I've entitled this message The End is Coming Soon. Have you ever thought about that? I heard that a lot in November after the election! Haha!
Jesus, in this chapter, gives us some insight on the future, and what this world is coming to.
Now, let me just say as Christians and pastors and bible teachers, we often approach this chapter missing its primary purpose. Jesus isn't teaching us how to accurately forecast the future, but how to obediently live in the present. Jesus informs us about the future to motivate us for today.
Some folks treat this chapter, and other prophetic passages, like a biblical version of the movie 'National Treasure' trying to find cleverly placed clues and codes to decipher the puzzle of the end times. I think if that's what Jesus intended; He would have been far more specific. But He wasn't.
Who did Jesus have in front of Him? His Disciples. What was His main concern for them? Getting them ready to do ministry. This chapter isn't about speculation. This chapter is about preparation.
This chapter is about discipleship. Jesus isn't making 'end time' experts. He's making present time disciples. Disciples who want to obey Him and who are committed to the mission. Listen, if you care more about figuring out the end time than reaching you ...
