In his commencement speech to the Wellesley High School Class of 2012, David McCullough delivered a word those present wouldn't soon forget. He said, ''None of you is special; nor are you exceptional... You're pampered, cosseted, doted upon, helmeted, bubble wrapped, nudged, cajoled, feted, and fawned over. Contrary to what your U9 soccer trophy says, or what your glowing 7th grade report card shows... and despite every assurance of a certain corpulent, purple dinosaur, and that nice Mister Rogers... and no matter how often your maternal caped crusader (mom) has swooped in to save you - you're nothing special.
This reminds me of the Fortune 500 CEO whose flight had to make an emergency landing. Everyone was de-boarded and required to rebook their flights. This guy, decided he was too good to wait, so he walked by 50+ people in line to the counter. After blaming the agent for the delay and missing his meeting, he demanded access onto the flight. The agent kindly directed him to get back in line to wait his turn. He replied, ''Young lady, do you know who I am? I could have your job w/ a single phone call!'' She replied, ''Do you know who I am? I'm the person who decides whether or not you get on this flight - now go and wait your turn.''
For several weeks we've been in a series entitled, The Great Escape looking at the things that have the ability to take us hostage to steal our intimacy w/ God. We've looked at things like anxiety, anger, ambition, appearance, misplaced religion, and guilt/shame. This AM, I want to look at how we can be enslaved by entitlement.
