Intro: My story of Depression

Today I'll do my best to apply the gospel to depression. We will look at the Scriptures and see how God the Father through the power of the Holy Spirit and the work of Jesus can shine the light of hope in our darkest places.

Depression can range from having the winter blues to depths of despair so deep, dark and painful that we want to end our lives. It is what some call a ''stubborn darkness''. It does not want to go away and seems so overwhelming that we cannot imagine a way out. 

There is hope and there is an answer. Instead of making you wait till the end of the sermon for the answer I'll tell you now. The answer lies in John 8:12 where Jesus says, ''I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.'' Yes, Jesus is the answer to our depression. But let's explore this deeper because Jesus wants us to know him and His power to overcome our darkness.

Why do we get depressed and what does it look like?

People get depressed for a multitude of very specific personal reasons. So we can't say that there is one specific reason. But what normally happens is that there is an event (or series of events) in someone's life that affects one or more of the following areas: emotional, mental, physical, spiritual.

It could be a soldier coming home from war, a child who was abused or bullied, a mother who just had a baby, a conflict with a close friend, a car accident, a fractured marriage, the death of a loved one, a job loss or change or a heart attack. It could be a lack of understanding of the full forgiveness of God or a doubting faith. Each person who struggles with depression has a different story to tell.
