Introduction + Laodecia:

Illus. I remember when I would go to the beach as a child on family vacation. I would get on a float, go out into the water. And relax.

My dad would always say, ''Make sure to look up, and keep your eyes on our hotel.
If not, you'll drift away. You'll be far from home.''

What did I do? I'd go out into the water... Get comfortable. Relax... A half-hour later, I'd look up... And not see my family anywhere near me. I'd drifted a quarter mile from my hotel.

I got comfortable. I took my eyes off of my point of reference. And I drifted away. I didn't actively paddle my way down the beach... It just happened.

We are studying the seven letters Jesus wrote to the churches in Asia Minor. This week, we look at Laodicea.

They were a church that comfortable. They were prosperous. They were successful. They enjoyed the comfort of prosperity, they took their eyes off of their reference point (Christ)... And they drifted.

[14] ''And to the angel of the church in Laodicea write: 'The words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God's creation.

There is actually a great deal of history on Laodicea, so we know quite about this city.

KNOWN FOR WEALTH

Laodicea was a very important financial center in this part of the world.

Do you remember last week, I talked about all the earthquakes that destroyed Philadelphia?

Well, Laodicea was a only about 40 miles from Philadelphia. So, they were hit by the same earthquakes. But when Rome offered to help them rebuild. They refused government aid.... They said, ''No! We can take care of it!''

They didn't need Rome's help. That's how wealthy they were. They literally told the Roman government... ''We can save ourselves. We can rebuild on our own.''

This was a very wealthy city.
