Overcoming Pornography (1 of 2)
Series: Pornography
Steve Jones
Hebrew 4:16
SUMMARY: In this two-part sermon series we will address how to overcome an addiction to pornography using grace, confession and ''radical measures.'' Then we will cover how to fill the void in our lives that was masked by the pornography habit.
Intro: Let's look at some pornography statistics today. Not many, just a few. My purpose in these statistics is very narrow - it is just to show that pornography consumption is a widespread problem.
The average age of exposure to pornography has typically been 12 to 13 (pre-internet). Today, the average age of exposure is 11, which is directly related to the average age at which a son or daughter receives a smart phone.
In January of 2013, researchers at the University of Montreal wanted to compare the behavior of men who viewed sexually explicit material with those who had never looked at it at all. However, they had to drastically rethink their study after failing to find any males under twenty who had never viewed porn.
According to a 2014 Barna Group survey the following percentages of men say they view pornography at least once a month:
- 18-30-year-olds, 79%, 31-49-year-olds, 67%, 50-68-year-olds, 49%.
The following percentages of women say they view pornography at least once a month:
- 18-30-year-olds, 76%, 31-49-year-olds, 16%, 50-68-year-olds, 4%
- 64% of self-identified Christian men and 15% of self-identified Christian women view pornography at least once a month (compared to 65% of non-Christian men and 30% of non-Christian women).
- In 2002, of 1,351 ''pastors'' surveyed, 54% said they had viewed internet pornography with the last year.
Pornography consumption cuts across ALL demographics. So while this may not be your problem today, it is SOMEONE'S problem in here today. Because it is a shame-based addiction that is steeped in stigma, we simply don't know who in particular is fighting this bat ...
