Eternally Satisfying (3 of 3)
Series: First Name Basis
James Merritt
Isaiah 9:6
Introduction:
1. I am not trying to brag or name drop in what I am about to tell you, but I have to admit it is one of the coolest moments of my life. It was not long after I had served as President of the Southern Baptist Convention and I was invited to the White House, along with a pastor who succeeded me, Jack Graham, and O.S. Hawkins who heads up the investment side of the Southern Baptist Convention. We had been invited by President George Bush, along with hundreds of others, to hear him address the action he was taking to deal with the AIDS problem in Africa.
2. There were about 250 people in the room and after he spoke he stepped down off the podium to leave the room. He was shaking hands and he looked over in our direction and spotted me, sitting between Jack and OS, who knew him when he was Governor of Texas. I had met the President on two other occasions and he has a tremendous memory. When he saw me, and Jack and OS, he looked at us and me directly and said, ''James, did you bring the entire Southern Baptist Convention with you?'' I have to admit it was pretty cool that he called me by my first name. I am glad to know that he is on a first name basis with me (but let me quickly add I have never been on a first name basis with him.)
3. Even more amazing is that we can be on a first name basis with the Creator of the Universe, the Savior of the World, and the Lord of everything. On this Christmas Eve, I want to welcome you if you are just joining us for the first time. We are concluding a series we have been calling ''First Name Basis,'' because 700 years before Jesus Christ was even born, a prophet, by the name of Isaiah, described not only who Jesus was, but then tells us the names He should be called. He let us know that the God who sent His Son and the Son who came wants to be addressed on a first name basis. These names show us not only what Jesus is to b ...
