Introduction: Turning the calendar each year from December to January, entering a New Year offers us a time to reflect over the past year and it is a hopeful kind of period when we can put the past behind us and ''do overs'' seem possible, and they are! Each January that rolls around we stand at a crossroads. The old is behind us and new paths forward lie before us. But which path will we take? What direction will we travel? And that brings me to our text in Matthew 7:13-14 where Jesus presents a crossroads of sorts - two ways, two paths, two roads that we might take - the choice is yours. And the consequence of our choice has the power to impact us powerfully for good or bad.
Here is how Jesus describes these two ways (Read Matthew 7:13-14). First, there is the narrow path or gate. This way is small, it is not easily apparent, only a few find it, and yet this narrow way leads to life. Then there is the wide path or gate. This way is broad, it seems evident because so many are on this path, many people are entering and traveling this way, but this way does not lead to life but to destruction.
Even though there is a choice as to which path we could take, Jesus makes it clear that following Him means that we will ''enter through the narrow gate'' even though it is the difficult way, not many are heading in that direction, and it is hard at times. And our text is clear that the narrow way is the only path that leads to life.
