Introduction: A disciple of Jesus is one who takes the road less traveled, they do not become distracted, and they bear spiritual fruit. In a teaching about bearing spiritual fruit, Jesus said in John 15:8, ''This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.'' What brings glory to God is a life that bears the family resemblance - looking like the Christ we follow. And the reason is, because when we look like Christ, we will bear spiritual fruit that allows us to fulfill God's kingdom mission in the world of making disciples of all persons.

What does this spiritual fruit look like? And how is it produced? A concise picture of what spiritual fruit looks like is found in Galatians chapter 5. Paul contrasts ''the acts of the flesh'' (5:19-21) with ''the fruit of the Spirit'' (5:22-23). The Acts of the Flesh (read 5:19-21): (1) They are obvious, (2) Not an exhaustive list, (3) Christians sometimes commit, (4) Important distinction, ''those who live like this'' (verb indicates habitual continuation) should have no reason to believe that they are or will be in the kingdom of God.

The ''acts'' or ''works'' of the flesh indicate actions that come from what we can produce naturally. But ''The fruit of the Spirit'' on the other hand suggests that which is made possible and only possible by the Spirit of God. They are produced as we ''keep in step with the Spirit.'' Notice how different The Fruit of the Spirit is (read 5:22-23).

Timothy George says the acts of the flesh are disorderly, chaotic, incomplete, and correspond to the random and compulsive character of sin itself, while the fruit of the Spirit is orderly, there is a harmony to the fruit.
