Mark 7:31-37
Let's open our bibles together to Mark 7. Our text describes the day Jesus sighed. You've heard a lot about the day Jesus died, but do you know much about the day Jesus sighed? Well, you will after today.
I've been a pastor now for over 25 years, and I have to admit I've done some crazy things. Like the time I used Dr. Pepper instead of grape juice for the Lord's Supper in a wedding. It's a long story. Let's just say I was being resourceful.
Or like the time in my very first year as a pastor, I stepped up to the pulpit to preach and opened my bible, but my sermon notes were missing. I was mortified. So I did what humble pastor would do. I reverently said, ''You know, I feel like the Lord wants us to sing one more song of praise this morning, don't you?'' Very smooth! As they sang the song, I searched for my sermon. I'm sure many of them wished I hadn't found it.
Or like the time I baptized an elderly woman who was wearing a wig. She came up out of the water, but her hair didn't. The congregation gasped and I panicked. I looked at her and looked at her hair. I looked at her and looked at her hair. Seminary had not prepared me for this. Should I ignore it and pretend it didn't happen? Should I scoop up the wig, and politely hand it to her? Well, I'm a servant of Lord who wants to help. So I grabbed her hair out of the water, and softly placed it on top of her head. By this time the wig basically looked like a water-soaked gerbil. Not a good look. Thankfully, this was before the days of YouTube.
I could go on and on with the strange and crazy things I've done in ministry. Today's passage of Scripture is an encouragement to me because we're going to see Jesus doing some strange things, we might even say some gross things while ministering to people.
