OPENING JOKE: Mrs Mohler who was in court for the death of her third husband. The lawyer asked, ''What happened to your first husband?'' He died of mushroom poisoning. The lawyer asked, ''What happened to your second husband?'' He died of mushroom poisoning also. Then he asked, ''What happened to your third husband?'' He died of a brain concussion. Why is that? Because he wouldn't eat mushrooms.

INTRODUCTION: Today we come to the end of our journey through the introduction of the most popular sermon of all time the, ''Sermon on the Mount''.

The first word Jesus spoke to a public audience is the word, ''blessed''. We've established the meaning of ''Blessed'' - it's walking in the power, presence, and provision of God. This portion of the sermon on the mount describes the BLESSED LIFE.

Keep in mind, Jesus is not describing 8 different kinds of people, but 8 different characteristics that the person who knows God exhibits progressively as he or she matures.

So far we've talked about - Blessed one exhibits:
- Poverty of Spirit
- Meekness
- A hunger and thirst for righteousness
- They exhibit mercy
- The posses a purity of heart

Today we come to the final two characteristics. Two, that I believe are intentionally joined together for clarity and emphasis. Look at the words of our Lord in verse 9.

9 ''Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

Then as if to give a proper understanding of peace making, notice what follows...

10 ''Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 ''Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
