We are coming up on the 18th anniversary of one of the most devastating days in our history - 9/11. It is a day that none of us will ever forget. We can all tell the story of where we were that day when we heard the breaking news. It was a turning point in our minds about the security and freedoms that we enjoy as a nation.

I remember where I was that day. I was in NY City. I worked in mid-town Manhattan for one of the largest insurance companies in the world. My position took me downtown to the World Trade Center a few times a year to meet with some of the consultants and brokers that we worked with. On this particular day, however, I had a 9 AM meeting in uptown Manhattan - all the way up on 84th St. It was a crisp, clear beautiful Tuesday morning. As our meeting was beginning, we began to hear sirens and more sirens. We could hear beeping horns and helicopters. The purpose of the meeting was to try to win a new client, but I couldn't stop thinking about what could be going on outside. Just as I was about to say something to the group, an employee of the consulting firm came into our meeting and said that an airplane had hit one of the twin towers. We thought it must have been a little private airplane and it is probably sinking in the Hudson River now. Then the news that it was a major airline came and that there was a second airplane that went into the second tower. The meeting broke up and we all went outside.

When I got outside it was complete bedlam. I tried to call home but there was no cell service in the city. The traffic had come to a stop. There were no subways running. People were running through the streets trying to get through on their cell phones to their loved ones but to no avail. I couldn't get through to Gerri.
