Matthew 9:35
In our sermon series ''On Mission,'' here is what we have learned so far:
God is calling the church to arise out of her slumber and sleep to realize that the Christian life is not only about what we get as believers in Jesus, but also about what we do for others.
We learned what it means when Jesus said, ''the fields are ripe unto harvest,'' and that the harvest is ready and right in front of our eyes. We saw that when Jesus was talking with the woman at the well, He was exemplifying that we cannot let religious rules or preferences dictate our harvest field, but that there are multitudes in the valley of decision.
To me the most profound and pivotal message we learned in this series was this story:
Matthew 9:35 Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. 36 But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd.
This feels to me like where we are as a church. Jesus was having great services in the synagogues, preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom and healing all manner of disease, but when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them. We too should not just be concentrating on the amazing things that God is doing inside the church, but that He is also giving us a heart for those outside. Compassion is a broken heart for the less fortunate coupled with a strong desire to help them.
We learned that the motive behind what we do for others must be LOVE. Jesus said that when He returns, He will say to the sheep, ''Come inherit the Kingdom I have prepared for you... for when I was hungry, you gave Me food and when I was thirsty you gave Me drink...'' Our works don't save us, but they are a manifestation and an indication of our salva ...
